The Corner: Spring Crash Training

Last month I wrote an article outlining a fairly simplistic, moderate workout schedule for indoor cycling. It was motivated by the sight of snow falling outside my window and the realization that my training was fairly limited. Since then, the daylight hours have increased, daylight savings has added an hour of afternoon daylight in North America, and Boulder (and much of the U.S.) has been experiencing exceptionally warm temperatures. It appears as if it’s time to ride again.

Working Out With a Partner

I started training with my brother who is new to triathlons, and I was looking for information about training with a partner. I came across this interesting article.

Many studies show that having a workout partner will increase your chances to see results, but it’s very important that you find the right one!

I’ve personally trained hundreds of people and also quietly observed thousands more as they find their way throughout fitness facilities. Some are obviously there to get in shape while others obviously there for other reasons…socialization.

Both are great reasons to join a fitness facility, but if you can coordinate both efforts you may be better off in the end. One of the many reasons people hire personal trainers is for the “accountability” factor and motivation….

18 Week Triathlon Training

This schedule, on the Sacramento Bee site, is a great schedule for the intermediate beginner (1 to 3 sprint tri’s under your belt) or the intermediate triathlete who is getting back into training after winter.

Good detail in the schedule, but you need to know what kinds of specific drills you want to do for each sport.

Indoor Triathlon for Practice?

I have seen some during the triathlon competition season. It seems these are more for people who have a real fear of open water swims. I’m not criticizing–my fear of open water is something that I have actively have to work to get over in the beginning of every season! I’m hoping that will go away completely one day!

But I like the idea of short indoor triathlons during the winter to let complete beginners have a taste of the competition or even to spice up off-season condition for experienced triathletes.

I saw this article about the Grand Haven Community Aquatics Center in Grand Haven, Michigan holding its first indoor triathlon: 15 minutes of swimming in the competition pool, 15 minutes of stationary bicycling in the auxiliary gym and 15 minutes running on the indoor track to take place Feb. 15, 2009. I would like one a little longer for me, but I think this is a fantastic idea and am going to suggest it at my local Y.
